Radical Ceramics - Rethinking Geopolymers

In the transition towards a carbon-neutral society, the use of existing natural materials has a crucial role. However, natural materials, such as clay, have become waste at the expense of other productions. This project investigates the potential of local clay as a material for geopolymers. The use of such geopolymers would reduce the ecological footprint of the construction sector. To expand the possibilities of geopolymers as a greener alternative, we also envision the possibilities of geopolymers within the creative studio practices.
Developed through an interdisciplinary collaboration, the Radical Ceramics Research Group exhibition presents geopolymers as a new material made from unfired clay. Structured as a living laboratory, encouraging visitors to interact with and explore the displayed materials and objects. The space opens with a wide range of minerals, clays, and wild kaolins used in the development of the material. Through haptic stations, visitors are invited to touch and discover the potential of geopolymers. The exhibition also brings new technologies and fabrication methods into dialogue, including 3D printing, jiggering, and casting, demonstrating the material's diverse aesthetic possibilities and physical properties.
The exhibition was part of Designs for a Cooler Planet 2023, the official programme of Helsinki Design Week.
This research project is a collaboration between (ARTS) Department of Design and (ENG) Department of Civil Engineering in Aalto University. It is funded by the Radical Creativity program 2022-2024.
