Terraforms - Material and Patterns Design

"Nature’s intelligence manifest through its adaptive, responsive, and evolving capabilities […] among its clearest expressions are emergent spatial patterns. […] We developed an experimental, analytical, and computational framework to create self-organizing material patterns—Terraforms—using a ternary mixture of clay, water, and binder subjected to uniform mechanical pressure."
This research project is a collaboration between Enza Migliore (Materialities Research Group, SUSTech School of Design) and Matteo Convertino (fuTuRE EcoSystems Lab , Tsinghua SIGS). It have been published in Scientific Reports in an article exploring the conception and making of Terraforms. My role as a designer focused on the development and fabrication of the Terraforms. I was responsible for conducting the laboratory experiments and developing the methods and techniques required to achieve precise and replicable results. This work was closely connected to the curation and production of the photographic and video documentation of the research process.
