Radical Ceramics - Recipes for Geopolymers
Material Design, Local Clay, Costruction Waste
2023
The research investigates the potential of local clay as a material for geopolymers, a more sustainable alternative to ceramics that does not require firing while maintaining strength, water, and fire resistance. The research involves developing, testing, and analysing custom geopolymer recipes made from ground local soil or construction waste combined with a chemical activator, resulting in a series of test cubes. The findings were showcased in Radical Ceramics – Rethinking Geopolymers as a new possibility for creative studio practice and the construction sector.
The Radical Ceramics Research Group is a collaboration between the Department of Design (ARTS) and the Department of Civil Engineering (ENG) at Aalto University, Finland. The research was funded by the Radical Creativity programme 2022–2024.
